Complex Behaviour Support

Individualised, person-centred support for people with complex support needs and behaviours of concern. As an NDIS registered Module 2A provider, our trained team implements Behaviour Support Plans with care, consistency and respect.

Implementing Behaviour Support Plans

All behaviour has meaning. Behaviour Support Plans are developed by appropriately qualified NDIS Behaviour Support Practitioners, who work to understand the function of a person’s behaviour and the supports that help them live a good life. Our role is to put each plan into practice, every shift, in a way that is individual to that person. We never apply the same approach to everyone.

Our role in behaviour support:

  • We implement Behaviour Support Plans developed by NDIS Behaviour Support Practitioners
  • We do not develop specialist Behaviour Support Plans
  • Strategies are applied as set out in each person’s plan
  • We share observations and feedback to support plan reviews
  • Understanding Each Plan

Reading and understanding each participant’s Behaviour Support Plan before support begins, so strategies are applied correctly and consistently.

  • Proactive and Preventative Support

Applying the proactive strategies in each plan, such as predictable routines, environmental adjustments and meaningful activities, to reduce the likelihood of distress.

  • Recognising Early Warning Signs

Identifying potential triggers and early signs of distress, and responding early using the strategies set out in the plan.

  • Communication and Emotional Regulation

Supporting each person to communicate their needs and regulate their emotions, using their preferred ways of communicating.

  • Positive Reinforcement and Skill Building

Using positive reinforcement and skill-building strategies that help each person grow their independence and confidence.

  • Documented Response Strategies

Following the response strategies in the plan if behaviours escalate, with safety, dignity and the least restrictive approach always the priority.

  • Accurate Observations and Records

Keeping accurate behaviour observations and documentation, and monitoring how strategies are working over time.

  • Feedback and Reducing Restrictive Practices

Providing feedback to the Behaviour Support Practitioner and supporting the reduction and elimination of restrictive practices wherever possible.

Staff Training and CPI Certification

Prepared, confident and consistent support

All Briighter Care staff providing complex behaviour supports are trained in safe, respectful and person-centred approaches. All relevant staff hold a CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) Blue Card, with training updated annually. CPI training is an important part of how we prepare our team, and it sits alongside individualised participant training and guidance from each person’s Behaviour Support Practitioner. CPI training does not, on its own, authorise the use of any restrictive practice.

  • Early Support and Prevention

Recognising and responding early, using preventative approaches that reduce distress before it escalates.

  • Triggers and Escalation Indicators

Knowing the potential triggers and the early signs that a person may be feeling distressed.

  • Verbal and Non-verbal De-escalation

Using a calm voice, body language, tone and space to help a person feel safe and supported.

  • Least Restrictive Practice

Always choosing the least restrictive response that keeps everyone safe, with prevention coming first.

  • Positive Behaviour Support

Knowing that behaviour has a function, and focusing on quality of life, skill building and each person’s needs.

  • Applying Individual Plans

Applying each person’s Behaviour Support Plan accurately, and responding to behaviours of concern safely and with respect.

Individualised Participant Training

General training is only the starting point. Before providing complex behaviour support, our staff receive training specific to the individual person and their Behaviour Support Plan, completed in collaboration with the person’s Behaviour Support Practitioner where appropriate. This individualised preparation is essential to providing safe, consistent and high-quality support, and may include:

  • Getting to know the person, their interests and what matters to them
  • Understanding their communication style and preferences
  • Identifying individual triggers
  • Recognising early signs of distress
  • Learning proactive and preventative strategies
  • Understanding the person’s support goals
  • Learning specific de-escalation strategies
  • Understanding documented responses to behaviours of concern
  • Reviewing risk assessments and safety procedures
  • Understanding any regulated restrictive practices and the conditions of their use
  • Completing relevant training and plan acknowledgements
  • Building a consistent, familiar support team

Behaviour Monitoring, Weekly Updates and Trend Analysis

Detailed documentation is a key part of how we support each person. Our support workers record support delivery, behaviours of concern and relevant observations, and we provide weekly behaviour updates and trend analysis to support ongoing review and collaborative decision-making.

Weekly reporting complements, and never replaces, immediate incident escalation and our mandatory reporting obligations.

Record

Support workers record behaviours of concern, relevant observations and the strategies they used, including frequency, duration and intensity where relevant.

Identify

We look for potential triggers and contributing factors, and review how the person responded to the support strategies used.

Analyse

Weekly behaviour updates and trend analysis help identify emerging patterns or changes over time.

Share and Adjust

Relevant information is shared with the Behaviour Support Practitioner and care team to support evidence-informed adjustments to support approaches.

Collaboration With Behaviour Support Practitioners

Consistent support works best when everyone works together. Briighter Care works collaboratively with each person’s Behaviour Support Practitioner and wider care team, which may include Support Coordinators, allied health professionals, family members, guardians, nominated supporters and other service providers. Working together helps keep behaviour support strategies consistent at home, in the community and across different environments.

Our commitment includes:

  • Implementation Meetings

Participating in Behaviour Support Plan implementation meetings.

  • Sharing Observations

Sharing relevant observations and feedback with the practitioner and care team.

  • Identifying Emerging Concerns

Identifying emerging concerns and changes in behaviour early.

  • Supporting Plan Reviews

Contributing information and feedback to support Behaviour Support Plan reviews.

  • Raising Concerns About Strategies

Communicating concerns about the effectiveness of strategies so they can be reviewed.

  • Reducing Restrictive Practices

Working together towards reducing and eliminating restrictive practices wherever possible.

Supporting Participants With Restrictive Practices

Briighter Care can support participants whose Behaviour Support Plans include regulated restrictive practices, subject to the applicable authorisation, consent, implementation and reporting requirements.

Regulated restrictive practices must be included in a Behaviour Support Plan developed by an NDIS Behaviour Support Practitioner. In NSW, they are authorised through the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) Restrictive Practices Authorisation process. Our Module 2A registration means we are assessed against the NDIS Practice Standards for implementing Behaviour Support Plans. It does not, on its own, authorise the use of any restrictive practice.

Restrictive practices are never used for convenience or punishment.

  • Used only where authorised as required
  • Used only within the scope and conditions set out in the plan
  • The least restrictive appropriate option is always prioritised
  • Every use is documented and reported as required
  • Proper Authorisation

Regulated restrictive practices are only used where they are included in the person’s Behaviour Support Plan and authorised where required.

  • Plan-Specific Understanding

Staff understand the specific requirements, scope and conditions for each practice in the person’s plan.

  • Participant-Specific Training

Staff complete training specific to the person and their plan before implementing any regulated restrictive practice.

  • Least Restrictive First

Proactive and preventative strategies come first, and the least restrictive appropriate response is always prioritised.

  • Monitoring and Reporting

The use of regulated restrictive practices is monitored, documented and reported to the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission as required.

  • Working Towards Reduction

We work with Behaviour Support Practitioners towards reducing and eliminating restrictive practices over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Briighter Care implements Behaviour Support Plans developed by appropriately qualified NDIS Behaviour Support Practitioners. If a person does not yet have a Behaviour Support Plan, we encourage them, their family or their Support Coordinator to talk about engaging a Behaviour Support Practitioner.

We welcome enquiries from participants, families, guardians, nominated supporters, Support Coordinators and Behaviour Support Practitioners.

Funding depends on each participant’s NDIS plan, goals and circumstances. We are happy to talk through how your supports could be delivered with you, your Support Coordinator or your Plan Manager.

Support workers follow the person’s Behaviour Support Plan, focus on immediate safety and escalate to management straight away. Incidents are recorded and managed through our incident management system, and reportable incidents are notified to the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission as required. Weekly behaviour updates never replace immediate escalation.

Staff complete participant-specific training on the person’s Behaviour Support Plan, communication, triggers, strategies and any regulated restrictive practices, in addition to our general training and annual CPI Blue Card training. Meet our support team.
